Great New Book on Digital Evolution
After a long break away from serious research about how computers and the internet affect the evolution of our way of thinking, I find myself being drawn back into the discussion. My interest has been reborn in part due to a new book called “iBrain: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind” by Dr. Gary Small and Gigi Vorgan.
I remember sitting around McLuhans old desk in the McLuhan Institute at the University of Toronto, about 22 years ago when I was a O.I.S.E. grad student. Discussions varied, but they all had something to do with media since of course we were sitting at McLuhans old desk. At the time I remember I was working with the concept of how computer storage was an extension of our brain and how this may change the way that we think. Now, years later, I find that my thinking along these lines has evolved and this new book by Small and Vorgan has really started the neurons firing again.
Small and Vorgan sum up their hypothesis in this statement, “…today’s technological and digital progress is likely causing our brains to evolve at an unprecedented pace.” I haven’t completed it yet, but it is a great book.
